Who is this course suitable for?

This course is suitable for anyone supporting children and young people with Pathological Demand Avoidance or Demand Avoidant behaviours – including carers, foster carers, residential home providers, teachers and pastoral staff

What prior knowledge or experience is needed?

No previous knowledge or experience is required for this course. Delegates will be given strategies to help provide sanctuary, structure and nurture.

Summary of the course

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex Autism Spectrum Condition characterised by anxiety driven need to be in control.  Children and young people with PDA need a different approach to the ones used with other Autism Spectrum conditions. This course will teach learners how PDA differs from other types of autism. Most importantly the course will teach effective strategies to ensure that those who work with children and young people with PDA can support them to help them meet their potential and manage their behaviour.

Course contents

  • Understand the meaning of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)
  • Understand the impact PDA has on a child, teenager or young Adult and they might be supported.
  • Understand the key principles of positive behaviour management when working with children, teenagers and young adults with PDA
  • Understand the effects that PDA has on learning and how to reduce the impact of this
