"As a result of this course I'll Include more sensory activities and use more real life experiences and objects when teaching maths. I will model a few activities for teachers and TAs in my school.
I am also thinking of moving forward with a moderation, regarding ways of collecting and presenting evidence for pupils' maths work (picture assessment, observation templates etc.)" Chrysi Apalodima, Turney School London
For teachers and TAs working with students with severe learning difficulties in special and mainstream schools
The aim of this course is to help with the perennially difficult task of teaching mathematical concepts to pupils with severe learning difficulties - to help them develop an understanding of patterns and objects in the world and, through repetition of varied experiences, become able to generalise, make use of and communicate about the concepts they have learned.
The course suggests:
· ways of demonstrating mathematical concepts to children at the earliest levels of development , using multisensory equipment, toys and games.
· approaches relating different areas of Maths to the real world, with hands-on experiences and innovative use of everyday objects in the teaching of:
v Number – counting, adding, subtracting
v Measuring – length. mass, distance, time, money
v Shapes – 2D and 3D
