The Al Sham Centre is a very new special school for children with additional needs, in the United Arab Emirate of Sharjah. Managed and headed up by Ursula, a South African with a vision that this school, which only opened in March 2015, will become a centre of excellence and training for special school staff across the UAE. A very cosmopolitan staff team from many different Middle Eastern countries work together to provide an education and therapy for the twenty or so children who currently attend this new school.
In January Concept Training, based in Morecambe, sent two trainers, Honor Coombs and Colin Troy, out to Sharjah to deliver some very intensive days of staff training at The Al Sham Centre. Teachers, therapists, psychologists, teaching assistants and parents were invited to attend a selection of courses and workshops in Autistic Spectrum Conditions, Sensory Play and Learning in the Outdoors.
Honor’s two-day course, “Learning for all, through Sensory Play & the Outdoor Environment”, was greeted enthusiastically by all. It’s a very practical course designed to be accessed by all staff including those for whom English is their second language and it promoted a huge amount of discussion and laughter as adults from different cultures and with a vast range of experience, explored and debated how to provide children with high quality sensory play experiences. Pupils from the school glimpsed everyone taking part in some practical activities on a grassy area outside the classroom and were invited to join in. This provided an invaluable opportunity to demonstrate some of the physical games for the vestibular and proprioceptive systems. It was hugely rewarding to include these primary-aged children in this learning opportunity for staff and for the trainer to see that this particular group of children were no different from the children she teaches back home in Lancaster.
The staff and parents couldn’t have been more friendly and welcoming. Their school is somewhat different from UK special schools but the children are just the same.
