Who is this course suitable for?
This course is suitable for anyone supporting people with Pathological Demand Avoidance or Demand Avoidant behaviours – including carers, foster carers, residential home providers. Teachers and pastoral staff in Mainstream and Specialist Schools - PRIMARY TO COLLEGE AGE STUDENTS 

What prior knowledge or experience is needed?

No previous knowledge or experience is required for this course.

Delegates will be given strategies to help provide sanctuary, structure and nurture.

Summary of the course:

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex Autism Spectrum Condition characterised by anxiety driven need to be in control.   People with PDA need a different approach to the ones used with other Autism Spectrum conditions. This course will teach learners how PDA differs from other types of autism. Most importantly the course will teach effective strategies to ensure that those who work with people with PDA can support them to help them meet their potential and manage their behaviour.

Course content:

  • Understand the meaning of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)
  • Understand the impact PDA has on a person and how they might be supported.
  • Understand the key principles of positive behaviour management when working with those with PDA
  • Understand the effects that PDA has on lifelong learning and social opportunities and how to reduce the impact of this
