Making Maths Meaningful and Fun for Pupils with SEN

£95.00+VAT

Course delivered by Video Conferencing via "Teams"

"As a result of this course I'll Include more sensory activities and use more real life experiences and objects when teaching maths. I will model a few activities for teachers and TAs in my school.

I am also thinking of moving forward with a moderation, regarding ways of collecting and presenting evidence for pupils' maths work (picture assessment, observation templates etc.)"    Chrysi Apalodima, Turney School London

The aim of the course is to help pupils develop basic Mathematical concepts, which is usually the most difficult aspect of teaching students with SEN.
Using everyday objects and familiar situations the suggested tasks enable pupils to make connections between their experiences and begin to see how they relate to each other and to the world around them.
The course demonstrates ways of teaching counting, adding and subtracting, measuring height and weight, time and money, relating  2D and 3D,shapes,  recognising attributes, and collecting and recording data.
It looks at the need for repetition, hopefully leading to generalisation of learning, and ways of presenting tasks to take account of individual  learning styles. There is a brief section on recording progress and example extracts from special school schemes of work.
It is intended to be relevant to the full range of ability and need from Engagement level to what used to be NC level 1 and there are many example activities relevant to a wide age range, from 3 to 19 years

The course suggests:

·       ways of demonstrating mathematical concepts to pupils at the earliest levels of development

·       approaches relating different areas of Maths to the real world for pupils across the SEND ability range

·       examples of tasks using everyday objects familiar to pupils to demonstrate mathematical facts. In every area of the curriculum.
