Supporting Left-handers in the Education SettingNew course:
Supporting Left-handers in the Education Setting
Currently available "In-House" only
Left-handedness is the most common 'special need' encountered in schools and colleges today yet it is rarely considered in educational planning.
It is accepted between 8-12% of the general population is left-handed with a number of prominent personalities ably demonstrating the skills which left-handers can have: President Obama (among an array of US Presidents); Leonardo de Vinci; Charlie Chaplin; Napoleon Bonaparte; John McEnroe and Winston Churchill to name but a few. Even Bart Simpson gets in on the act! At the other end of the spectrum however, there are a significant number who present with literacy difficulties with apparently higher rates of dyslexia and dyspraxia. It is known though, that there is no direct reason for co-morbidity between these conditions and left-handedness. There is also evidence that left-handed students are more prone to accidental injury.
Left-handedness is genetic unless caused by trauma.
The course is designed to empower staff working with left-handers to better understand and meet their needs. The course is relevant to all age ranges and all members of staff. Right and left-handed!)
