Autism Tips
When working with children who have autism;
- Say what you mean and mean what you say
- If in doubt (that they have fully understood what has been said), make it visual – write it or draw it
- Make sure they have a visual timetable every day
- Start a sentence by using their name so they know you are talking to them
- Give them time to process information
- Tell them what you want them to do, not what you want them to stop doing e.g ‘walk’ not ‘stop running’
- Tell them what they have done well…’good sitting’ not ‘good boy’
- Remember behaviour is a form of communication, when presented with a challenging situation, think ‘what is this child trying to tell me’
