This course is suitable for anyone who works with children, young people or adults who are on the autism spectrum in an educational setting.

What prior knowledge or experience is needed?

Course participants will be expected to have some knowledge and understanding of the main areas of difficulty or ‘triad of impairments’ that people on the autism spectrum commonly experience.

Summary of the course

It is not uncommon for pupils or students who are on the autism spectrum to experience difficulties in completing written tasks.

With current educational systems placing a great emphasis on the production of written work, it is not surprising that many pupils on the autism spectrum in both mainstream and special schools are underachieving with regards to demonstrating their learning through written work.

• The language and literacy skills needed for writing and how the autistic brain may require specific interventions.

• Understanding behavioural issues relating to a reluctance to produce written work.

• ICT and its role in overcoming some areas of difficulty.

• Practical strategies that can be implemented to support the person on the autism spectrum with written tasks.
