Summary of the course

For many pupils on the Autism Spectrum (including Asperger’s) Sex and Relationship lessons are confusing, overwhelming and full of ambiguity.  Often they struggle with understanding relationships, different points of view and being able to make informed decisions.  They may take a literal interpretation of issues and advice which can lead to unsafe and poor decisions.  Many pupils with ASC do not have the maturity, understanding or emotional awareness to process the content of a regular SRE lesson.

This course takes leading research into puberty, sexuality and ASC, and looks at the issues that are common in the pupils we work with.  The course will explore a structured programme that can be implemented alongside your school scheme of work and look at how we can build on the foundational knowledge and understanding that many pupils with ASC miss out on because of their poor self-awareness and relationship skills.

Course contents

  • Exploring the issues surrounding SRE and the Autistic Spectrum Conditions
  • A five stage programme of SRE for puypils with ASC
  • How to implement SRE support for ASC pupils in your school
  • Time to share, discuss, problem solve and look at resources
