New course: Eating and Drinking with Safety and Dignity

This course is designed to give a basic awareness of people who have difficulties eating and drinking.  It is a very practical course which includes theory, lots of interactive taskes, food tasting, case studies and demonstrations.

The course begins with a basic awareness of the normal swallow to lay out the foundation for the day.  Signs and symptoms people may show if they have a swallowing difficulty.  We will watch a short video to identify potential problems with environments, equipment, food preparation and communication.

Outcomes of the day:

  • To understand the swallowing process and identify what can 'go wrong'
  • Recognise the risks to take into consideration when supporting people who have eating and drinking difficulties
  • Understand how difficulties eating and drinking can affect a persons health
  • Identify ways to support people with eating and drinking difficulties in a safer way
