How you will benefit:
To be assertive means on the one hand to stand up for your rights in such a way that you do not tread on the rights of another. On the other it means to express yourself in a clear, concise way, being direct in statin your needs, wants, opinions, feelings and beliefs. For anyone who has ever felt victimised by aggressive or bullying behaviour, learning to use assertive behaviour can turn a negative experience into a positive one. Understanding and using assertive behaviour can be life changing:
- By understanding that to assert yourself appropriately can help build a higher degree of self-confidence and self-esteem
- Stand up for yourself, learn to behave assertively and shed the fear attached to this behaviour
- Learn to handle the aggressive behaviour of others; face conflict with calm and equanimity
- Recognise the signs that lead to these behaviours, allowing you to prepare yourself for an appropriate response or alternative behaviours
- Achieve a higher degree of self-confidence and self-esteem
- Deal with meetings and social occasions with a positive outlook
- Reduce and manage stress
- Become confident in handling unexpected situations

- Assertive, non-assertive (passive), aggressive behaviour; what they are and their effects
- To use assertive behaviour appropriately and positively
- to recognise these behaviours in yourself and others - verbally and non-verbally
- Why rights are important to behaving assertively; what are your rights, responsibilities and beliefs?
- A variety of assertive behaviours appropriate to many different situations
- To handle aggressive behaviours from others
- To contribute assertively to meetings and social occasions
